In the first series, it was expertly hosted by Jonathan Ross, and the second and third seasons onwards were hosted by
female host Hannigan.
Each episode starts off with the introduction stating the purpose of the series. Penn & Teller come out and take their seats towards the stage. The the hopeful performers perform their acts before them in front of a an audience of live viewers. After each performance, Penn & Teller privately talk while the host interview the magicians. Penn & Teller then reveal whether they are aware of the method used to perform the trick, usually using cryptic words or by recording the technique and then present it to the magicians in order to verify, so as to avoid publicly exposing the methods behind the trick.
Season 7 will start filming on October 10, 2022.

Fool Us was filmed at Fountain Studios in London, England (season one) as well as the Penn and Teller Theatre at Las Vegas (season two onward). Following each show, if Penn & Teller cannot figure out how the trick was done, and the magician(s) who performed the trick get the Fool Us trophy and a five-star flight for a trip to Las Vegas to perform as the opening act of Penn & Teller's show also at The Rio Hotel & Casino.

Teller states that doublespeak helps teach people new techniques without spoiling the trick. Should Penn & Teller are wrong, or cannot figure out the method used to perform the trick, the magician wins a Fool Us trophy and the possibility of performing at one of Penn & Teller's Las Vegas shows. A backstage judge who is well-versed in the art of magic business and intimately aware of how the trick is performed ahead of the event, will make any important calls as to whether Penn & Teller were properly fooled. After each program, Penn & Teller perform an act of magic that they have created.
Penn and Teller have a friendly rapport with the magicians who appear during their program. Penn and Teller's hosting tasks were temporarily handled from Jonathan Ross in the first season, and then they returned for the second season onward. Penn and Teller: Fool Us was filmed in Fountain Studios in London, England for its first season, before being moved to the Penn & Teller Theater in Las Vegas, Nevada for its second season onward.

Season three onward, from season three, the top ten performers who successfully fooled Penn and Teller are invited back to appear on an episode special of Fool Us in which they each will perform their act once more and attempt to fool Penn & Teller for an additional ten thousand dollars prize.
Although they remain silent and motionless throughout the course in the production, the veteran duo of Penn & Teller can communicate with each with subtle gestures. They will also sometimes communicate with the magician who is performing and ask for them to repeat a specific action or provide more information.
